Historical Significance
Five Faces replicates and overlaps Csuri’s now well-known drawing of a bearded man. Although simple in its final aesthetic form, the work expresses many aspects of Csuri’s creative vision. Five Faces demonstrates one of Csuri’s earliest attempts at what is referred to today as instancing. The overlapping of identical objects further suggests movement and foreshadows Csuri’s later work with Real-time art objects and animation in the later 1960s and early 1970s.
