  • Filename: 20.jpg
  • Accession: C07.13158

  • Title: Leonardo's Human Proportions

  • Creator: Charles A. Csuri
  • Date: 1966

  • Type: drawing
  • Sub-Type (Sub-Genre): plotter drawing
  • Material: black ink, paper
  • Hardware: Calcomp drum plotter model 565, IBM 7094, punch cards
  • Collection: Charles A. Csuri
  • Historical Significance: Csuri continued to work with transformations on drawings and created several works based on Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. To do this, Csuri first made a drawing based on Leonardo’s famous sketch. He then invoked mathematical concepts as a means by which to transform his drawing. By varying the numbers in the equations, Csuri was able to direct the computer to alter his original drawing. See also "Leondardo di Vinci Series."

  • Artist's Comments: The mathematical function enabled me to define the region bounding the figure and to specify the desired height.
