Historical Significance
Mask of Fear reveals Csuri's love of Expressionism. When he returned to fine art creation after more than two decades of research and production work, the artist recognized that using different surfaces on objects of varying size, shape, and dimensionality could expand the possibilities of his oil paintings. In Mask of Fear, the viewer again sees Csuri's interest in object transformation, recalling the After the Artist series (1963-1964), the Leonardo da Vinci series (1966), and Birds in a Hat (1968). With Mask of Fear, Csuri's transformations now take place within the realm of color, light, and three-dimensional space.
