Historical Significance

At the age of 41, when Csuri began creating art with a computer, he began questioning the relationship between the mind and the hand, as well as the role of a tactile-kinesthetic approach to painting and drawing. As an experiment, he made a series of drawings using a pen and tiny dots to create forms. He saw this as a procedural approach to creating art in which he worked mechanically, imitating a machine. During this time, he also was investigating how words and comments might contribute to and become part of an art object. He was curious to see if, in the end, there would still be an aesthetic quality. Shes Watching Superman and The Shoemaker are two of Csuris most accomplished works in this series.

Artist's Comments

"I began questioning the role of a tactile-kinesthetic approach to painting and drawing. What is the relationship between the mind and the hand? As an experiment, I made this drawing, one dot at a time, with a pen. It was a procedural approach in which I worked mechanically like a machine. I also wondered if words and comments could contribute to and become part of an art object. I was curious to see if, in the end, there would still be an aesthetic quality.”
